Hindi Literature Essay
Achievements: Premchand brought realism to Hindi literature. Premchand wrote on the realistic issues of the day-communalism, corruption, zamindari, debt, poverty, colonialism etc. He avoided the use of highly Sanskritized Hindi and instead used the dialect of the common people. Premchand popularly known as Munshi Premchand was one of the greatest literary figures of modern Hindi literature. His stories vividly portrayed the social scenario of those times. Premchandââ¬â¢s real name was Dhanpat Rai Srivastava. He was born on July 31, 1880 in Lamahi near Varanasi where his father Munshi Azaayab Lal was a clerk in the post office. Premchand lost his mother when he was just seven years old. His father married again. Premchand was very close to his elder sister. His early education was in a madarasa under a Maulavi, where he learnt Urdu. When he was studying in the ninth class he was married, much against his wishes. He was only fifteen years old at that time. Premchand lost his father when he was sixteen years old. Premchand was left responsible for his stepmother and stepsiblings. He earned five rupees a month tutoring a lawyerââ¬â¢s child. Premchand passed his matriculation exam with great effort and took up a teaching position, with a monthly salary of eighteen rupees. While working, he studied privately and passed his Intermediate and B. A. examinations. Later, Premchand worked as the deputy sub-inspector of schools in what was then the United Provinces. In 1910, he was hauled up by the District Magistrate in Jamirpur for his anthology of short stories Soz-e-Watan (Dirge of the Nation), which was labelled seditious. His book Soz-e-Watan was banned by the then British government, which burnt all of the copies. Initially Premchand wrote in Urdu under the name of Nawabrai. However, when his novel Soz-e-Watan was confiscated by the British, he started writing under the pseudonym Premchand. Before Premchand, Hindi literature consisted mainly offantasy or religious works. Premchand brought realism to Hindi literature. He wrote over 300 stories, a dozen novels and two plays. The stories have been compiled and published as Maansarovar. His famous creations are: Panch Parameshvar, Idgah, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Poos Ki Raat, Bade Ghar Ki Beti, Kafan, Udhar Ki Ghadi, Namak Ka Daroga, Gaban, Godaan, and Nirmala. Premchand was a great social reformer; he married a child widow named Shivarani Devi. She wrote a book on him, Premchand Gharmein after his death. In 1921 he answered Gandhijiââ¬â¢s call and resigned from his job. He worked to generate patriotism and nationalistic sentiments in the general populace. When the editor of the journal _Maryaada_ was jailed in the freedom movement, Premchand worked for a time as the editor of that journal. Afterward, he worked as the principal in a school in the Kashi Vidyapeeth. The main characteristic of Premchandââ¬â¢s writings is his interesting storytelling and use of simple language. His novels describe the problems of rural and urban India. He avoided the use of highly Sanskritized Hindi and instead used the dialect of the common people. Premchand wrote on the realistic issues of the day -communalism, corruption, zamindari, debt, poverty, colonialism etc. Premchandââ¬â¢s writings have been translated not only into all Indian languages, but also Russian, Chinese, and many other foreign languages. He died on October 8, 1936.

The Luck of Roaring Camp Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Luck of Roaring Camp - Essay Example (Harte, 1886, p. 1) The story is set in the 1850ââ¬â¢s where a band of men living in the foothills of the Sierra Hills were brought together by one common goal of mining gold in the region. However, when the townââ¬â¢s prostitute, Cherokee Sal, died giving birth to a baby boy, all the men in the camp were shaken for birth was an uncommon occurrence in the region. They were all fascinated by the baby and this marked the start of a beautiful metamorphosis, where the men at the camp not only assumed responsibility for the infant but began to make radical changes in their appearance and lifestyle to provide a comfortable home to the boy, who was later christened as Thomas Luck by the townsfolk. This was one time, when the townspeople got their act together and took care of Luck in the best possible way. They wanted to give him ââ¬Å"the best that money could buyâ⬠and strangely enough, the infant was loved and nurtured by this uncultured band of men (Harte, 1886, p. 3). The most profound instance of budding paternal affection is depicted, when the new born Luck holds on to Old Kentuckââ¬â¢s finger that thoroughly embarrasses the man, but he is unable to hide the deep surge of emotion and joy that flushes over him and he relates that event to every man in the camp. The men then find ways to bond with each other and even decide to welcome visitors in this otherwise secluded, notorious town. All the men in the camp began taking extra care of their hygiene and there was a marked fall in the number of profanities that spewed out of every mouth. They were truly trying to be the best father figures for young Luck and despite the fact that fate had a different plan for the Townspeople but it sheds great light on human nature on how they can turn from wild men to protective, responsible adults as soon as an infant made its entry into their lives. Kentuck dies saving the

This essay is about what your life would be like not being as you are
This is about what your life would be like not being as you are now. Imagine yourself from a different background, or phy - Essay Example Indeed, my life is difficult, since I belong to a n extremely low income family, and my entire area comprises of such people. As far as my cultural adaptations are concerned, I have to comply with what the societyââ¬â¢s elders dictate to us. This means that I need to ask my husband regarding the changes in living conditions which come about every now and then. Since he helps next to nothing, it is just me who has to follow all the cultural and societal necessities. This makes it even harder for me since I do not have much on my hands and the only income that I receive is through cutting and stitching of clothes for middle income families which I do at night. I sleep little, yet I am able to devote my energies towards my family, and especially to my kids (Quaye n.p.). My husband does not ask anything apart from food 3 times a day, which I have to fulfill as a compulsion otherwise he beats me. Somehow life is moving forward and I am doing my best to adapt whatever comes my way. From my circumstances, I have realized that life is not a bed of roses, and that I have to live through this ordeal on a daily basis, for the rest of my life. I have also come to the reckoning that no one shall help me until and unless I help myself and find out answers to hidden questions. Even though I have no savings, yet I have to save for the rainy day because this is significant for the future of my family and especially my kids who shall grow up one day and start earning. But before that they must be educated, and I am doing my utmost to make this happen. All the boys are going to school while my youngest daughter is an infant at present. After school hours, 3 of my sons work at a local retail store for 3 hours each, this gives us enough to feed the family (Oââ¬â¢Boyle n.p.). My husband does not help at all ââ¬â and this is something that breaks my heart everyday. If only he had not committed himself towards drugs and found a decent job, our condition would have been so mu ch better. Yet this never came about, especially after our marriage. The limitations are immensely drawn my way. I have to get acquainted with the changes of weather, culture, and the peopleââ¬â¢s attitudes and moods towards us on a permanent basis. I also have to keep a check whether or not all my kids have had proper food before going to sleep. Sometimes I skip my own meals to make sure that my kids and my husband do not sleep without having something in their stomach. It indeed is a very difficult life and I am doing my best to make things work. My limitations have increased and I know this for sure that when my children grow up, these problems would enhance with the passage of time. I must be ready to counter such a threat which is something that makes me go worried for long periods of time. There just is no respite available to counter such a threat which looms large. If only I had a little more money, perhaps my mind would start functioning in a much positive fashion. But t hings are like that ââ¬â few and worrisome. I can only wish for a life which will make my family succeed but as things are now, this does not seem to be a probability. I cherish for a life where there is instant result for someone who does good and quick consequence for ones who forget their responsibilities and commit to their own good. I hold my husband responsible for making our lives miserable. Even though he spends quite a depressed life himself, but at least he could have or still can do something better to make

American Illustrator Gil Elvgren Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
American Illustrator Gil Elvgren - Coursework Example His career spanning four decades from the 1930s to the 1970s encompassed different types of art work including commercial advertisements for Coca Cola and other products, and creating illustrations for magazines like the Saturday Evening Post and Good Housekeeping. Elvgren as an artist continues to be remembered till today, mostly for his pin-up paintings for calendars commissioned and produced by the promotional firm Brown and Bigelow. Thesis Statement: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the work of American illustrator Gil Elvgren, particularly with reference to his pinup art. Gil Elvgrenââ¬â¢s Distinctive Pinup Art Style ââ¬Å"Although most of Gil Elvgrenââ¬â¢s work was created for commercial use, it has been increasingly recognized as fine art by many private collectors, dealers, galleries and museumsâ⬠(Meisel & Martignette:12). As the most important pinup and glamor artist of the twentieth century, Elvgrenââ¬â¢s expertise in portraying the feminine form was extended beyond the calendar pinup industry. He was greatly influenced by the early ââ¬Å"pretty girlâ⬠illustrators such as Charles Dana, Gibson, Andrew Loomis, and Howard Chandler Christy. The Brandywine School founded by Howard Pyle also influenced his work. Besides being a successful commercial artist in various fields, Gil Elvgren was also a professional photographer of repute. He had amazing energy and talent, and was considered as a respected and even revered teacher of students, some of whom went on to become famour artists in their own right. Elvgrenââ¬â¢s personally rendered instruction and support was responsible to a great extent, for his studentsââ¬â¢ success (Meisel & Martignette: 13). Although Elvgren was best known for his pinups, his advertising work ââ¬Å"depicted typical Americans, ordinary people doing everyday thingsâ⬠(ElvgrenPinup.com, 2010). Further, the women that the artist painted were not the femme fatale, the female adventuress, or somebodyââ¬â¢s mistress. They reflect the girl next door whose feminine charms are innocently revealed in an unexpected instant, in what might be an embarassing situation. The artistââ¬â¢s supporters agree that Gil Elvgren portraying that fleeting moment when a girl is caught off guard is not only unusual, but has a sexy quality about it. Several of his paintings from the 1940s to the 1960s feature a woman doing an ordinary task such as barbecuing, watering the lawn, or shopping, when she is unprepared for a sudden gust of smoke (Fig.1), jet of water from a hose (Fig.2) or other effect which raises her skirt to reveal her stockings and garters. The womanââ¬â¢s expression is one of shock but never horror, with a hint of a smile ââ¬Å"in the O of her perfectly painted lipsâ⬠(Taormino: 125). Fig.1. Smoke Screen by Gil Elvgren, 1958 (The Pinup Files 1, 2011) Fig.2. A Near Miss by Gil Elvgren, 1960 (The Pinup Files 2, 2011) It is evident that the context for the scene is created by Elvgren as a pretense for the viewer to get a glimpse under the girlââ¬â¢s skirt. It is both voyeuristic and innocent, because it tells the viewer that he just saw something that he was not supposed to. Though occasionally, the artist has uncovered the upper part of the body, there is very little nudity in his paintings which portrayed an old fashioned naughtiness (Taormino: 125). The Contribution of PInups to World War II Wartime imagery was an anomaly, deviating from the usual norms, and more decorous due to military control over the images. Gil

Karl Rahner Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Karl Rahner - Term Paper Example A Brief view of his chronology is given as; Educational Background of Karl Rahner: Education Place 1922-25 Jesuit formation in Ignatian spirituality and philosophy in Austria and Germany 1929-33 Theologies studies in Holland 1934-36 Graduation studies in philosophy at Freiburg & Martin Heideggarââ¬â¢s seminar 1936 Completion of doctoral and postdoctoral studies of theology at Innusbruck Works of Karl Rahner Karl Rahner was in fact a Christian catholic theologist who worked for the development of the faiths and principles of Christian religion. He wrote for the faiths of Christianity by the end of his life. Foundations of Christianity Faith These written faiths are the most important and significant among his works. These foundations describe as ââ¬Å"summaâ⬠of catholic theology. According to Rahner himself he wrote in the preface of this book that he wrote this book for the educated readers and he regard it as a basic saving of knowledge for everyone rather than only for th e sake of theology students. In this book Rahner called the existing idea of Christianity as a formal introduction. He book basically intends to support christens and anyone to adapt Christianity by basically emphasizing the existence of Christianity. The general methodology that has been adapted is the union of theology and philosophy. The roots of this dogma presented were in the beliefs of Christ. In the works of Rahner the traditional beliefs of the catholic have been indeed worked out again with a significant importance. A part of this Rahnerââ¬â¢s work is a combination of the deep insight of the dogmatic and metaphysical tradition along with Kerygmatic concern. The theology actually related to Peculiar theology. Concluding aspects of the faith of Christianity Generally Ranher has suggested that the basis of Christianity is reliable. Along with this it has also been concluded that he spiritual knowledge exists, although it is imperfect and limited but still it is the true fo rm of all the existing knowledge. Evolutionary concepts of Karl Rahner At the initial stages the catholic response to the evolutionary theories of the scientist Darwin was very reluctant but later on with the passage of time a linear evolutionary research was permitted to some level. The work of the two Theologists is very important in this aspect which has been emerged as the most influential work in catholic reconciliation with the theory of evolution. One of them is a well known Paleontologist and Jesuit Priest Pierre Theilhard de Chardin, the decisive works of whom have been very much useful for Catholic thinkers. The next one is Karl Rahner who in the decade of 1950 participated actively in the conferences and seminars thus striving for the correlation b/w sciences and Catholic perspectives. In the concepts presented by Karl Rahner the two core topics are modern evolutionary biology and named as emergence and the continuation of the evolutionary process. According to Karl Evolu tion is the process that continues with the survival of life and it is the process through which something new keeps on evolving without compromising the catholic concepts. Materialistic concepts for the evolution of the human life from an inanimate matter are quite controversial for catholic studies. With respect to the central thoughts in the Karl reconciliation concepts with evolutionary biology, the phenomenon of the active self-transcendence is the process by which

Journal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words - 4
Journal - Essay Example Attractive person strikes the cords in the hearts of most individuals who belong to the same community because he or she is believed to prove that harmony exists. Harmony, in its turn, can be viewed as a combination of ââ¬Ërightââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëdesirableââ¬â¢ phenomena or concepts. Getting the idea of what is right, people start looking for the proof that the ââ¬Ëright thingââ¬â¢ exists. Natalia Vodianova, the main character in the commercial, is seen by many as a very attractive woman. When she is shown in the video running with a prosthetic leg her aura of strength, glamorousness and grace is enhanced. In most cases, new things, unknown traits disagree with the concept of harmony and are not universally seen as attractive. But the video once again shows that the beauty is, indeed, in the eye of the beholder. Worrying about ââ¬Ënormsââ¬â¢ and labels people are ââ¬Ëblindfoldedââ¬â¢ and donââ¬â¢t see every personââ¬â¢s beauty. As the song goes ââ¬Å"Money canââ¬â¢t buy me loveâ⬠. But the same can be true about any other emotion or sensation. Money basically cannot make you feel something other that the joy of having money (provided you are prone to avarice). Thai commercial ââ¬Å"Unsung Heroâ⬠inspired me to consider what money really means to people and what ââ¬Ëcurrencyââ¬â¢ can be invested in life. According to the authors of the commercial what people really want has nothing to do with fame, fortune, and success. It is the emotion or feeling of happiness. And in many cases it has nothing to do with money. Going on holiday to a new location, trying new dishes, buying new things is exchanging money for sensations. The holiday sun tan disappears, exotic food is digested, new clothes or gadgets soon become habitual and start serving their purpose be it protecting us from the rain and cold or facilitating communication. But the sensations, the emotions such as the excitement of the discovery of new destinations, fascination with oneââ¬â¢s own reflection in the mirror
